Anonymous Assessment

ATLAS enables the following options for anonymous assessment:

  1. Anonymous submission = the assessor is unable to view the author of the submission.
  2. Anonymous assessor = the name of the assessor is not visible.
  3. Anonymous peer review = the name of the peer reviewer is not visible

Anonymous submission and Anonymous assessor will be described here. For details about Anonymous peer review please see the next section on Peer Review.

Anonymous Submission

If you need assessors to mark work without knowing the author of the submission you need to go to Management > Managers > Modify Permissions and untick the View author details option in the Anonymity section. When the assessors then view the Submissions page, all author names will be replaced by a random string of characters. Similarly, when the submission is opened, the author name in the footer will also be replaced by the same code. Note that if one author has multiple submissions on the workspace the same code will be used for all.

TIP!

Be aware that if the author has included their name in the title or text of the submission, this will NOT be anonymised - if anonymous marking is required you will need to instruct users to not include identifying details within their submission.

As with all Manager permissions, the View author details option will be applied as soon as saved. If the submission window is already open when the permission is applied the page will need to be refreshed for the changes to be visible. You can reverse this anonymity feature at any time by ticking the permission and saving again. The coded name will only be visible to those assessors for whom this permission has been applied - all other users viewing the submission page or the asset will see the full author details in the normal way.

TIP!

Once the assessment process is complete and before exporting grades (either manually or via the VLE block) it is recommended that the View author details permission is turned on again. This will ensure that any exports contain full author details

Anonymous Assessor

There are two ways in which assessor details can be anonymised:

(a) So that other assessors cannot view the name of the assessor(s) who have left feedback

Sometimes submissions will be marked by more than one assessor. If you do not want assessors to view the feedback left by other assessors you need to untick the View feedback option in the General section under Management > Managers > Modify Permissions. If however, you do want them to be able to view the feedback given but not view the author of the feedback you need to tick View feedback under General and untick View assessor details under Anonymity. This will anonymise the assessor details from the perspective of the workspace Manager for whom these permissions have been applied. The assessor's name will be replaced by a random string of characters.

(b) So that the asset owner cannot view the name of the assessor(s) who have left feedback

Alternatively, you might not want the asset owner to view the name of the assessor who has left feedback. To anonymise the assessor from the perspective of the workspace Member you need to go to Management > Members > Modify Permissions and untick View assessor details in the View section. When the asset owner views their feedback, either via ATLAS or via Pebble+, the assessor's name will be replaced by a random string of characters.
