Submission versioning

This setting allows you to capture a version of an asset at the point it's submitted to ATLAS. Learners can continue to edit their work, but when an asset is submitted to an Assignment with Submission versioning enabled, assessors will not see any changes made to the asset by the learner after submission. It's the equivalent of handing in a printed copy of your work to your assessor. The printed copy can never be modified, even if you continue working on it.

With Submission versioning, users will only need one version of their asset, as they can edit and reuse it for multiple assignments, creating a versioned view for assessment upon each submission. This will help users have clearer visibility of the submissions in their asset store, by decreasing the noise currently created from the need to submit multiple copies when their assets become locked for each submission. Learners can access their versioned submission by clicking the 'Go to assessor view' button from the 'Workspaces shared to' section of the info sidebar of their asset.

It is very important to note that:

  • Activity Logs and Collections will not be versioned.
  • Assets will show the most recent revisions if they are removed from the assignment/workspace, or moved to an assignment without versioning.

FAQ

What is the difference between submission versioning and using the revision deadline?

The revision deadline is set for a particular date and takes a snapshot of the submissions on that date. Before that date, changes to the submission will be visible.

Submission versioning takes the snapshot at the time of submission. If you select submission versioning, modification/revision deadlines are disabled as any changes post-submission will never show in the Submission Viewer for that assignment.

What is the difference between submission versioning and using pauses?

Pauses have to be manually created and will capture a snapshot view of all submissions in the assignment at that point in time. Submission versioning captures the snapshot view of the submission at the moment in time that it's submitted to ATLAS.

Does submission versioning work for all block types in templates and workbooks?

Yes, submission versioning works for all block types including media pickers and evidence holders.

How does submission versioning interact with other assignment settings?

  • Submission versioning and submission locking cannot be used on the same assignment. Enabling one will disable the other.
  • Submission versioning is only available on member-initiated assignments so that learners can choose when they are ready to submit their assets to ATLAS.
  • Submission versioning is not available on auto-submit resources as this could result in a user's submission showing with no content filled in when viewed from the assignment.
  • When an assignment is using Turnitin, the submitted version of the asset will be sent to Turnitin.

What happens if we move submissions that were versioned?

Submissions can be moved between assignments if:

  • Both assignments have submission versioning enabled.
  • You are moving from an assignment with submission versioning enabled to one without submission versioning enabled. This will remove the versioned view and you will see the most recent revisions to the submission.

Submissions cannot be moved from an assignment without submission versioning enabled to an assignment with submission versioning enabled as we cannot guarantee the version you see will be the correct one.

Can we change existing assignments to use submission versioning?

You cannot change an existing assignment that already has submissions on it to an assignment with submission versioning enabled. If the assignment has no submissions on it, you can enable the option.

What happens when we export or report on submissions from a versioned assignment?

Exporting the submission from ATLAS from an assignment with submission versioning enabled will show the versioned view.

Reporting on the submission from an assignment with submission versioning enabled will return data appropriate to the time of submission for that asset.
